6 stories to watch on the final day of the Premier League

Well, the Premier League season is almost over.

It feels like just yesterday we were witnessing the opening six-goal thriller between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield on a starry Friday night. But on Sunday, the curtain will come down on a term that has been fascinating from start to finish.

There have been other final days in Premier League history with bigger results, but the upcoming game will be the last chance for a chaotic trademark battle.

Here are six stories worth paying attention to this Sunday.

How hungover will Arsenal players be after Tuesday night’s extended Premier League victory celebrations? The answer will be clear from the first whistle at Selhurst Park, when a historic campaign concludes with a trip to Mikel Arteta’s Crystal Palace.

The fight to the death in the May sunshine will be celebrated by both sides’ supporters as they prepare for the European final next week. Widespread changes are expected, leading to either a frenzied goal fest or a dismal contest.

It’s the post-match festivities that really pique the interest of traveling supporters and Arsenal supporters watching from afar. After the full-time whistle, the Gunners were handed the Premier League trophy, with captain Martin Odegaard being the first to hand out the prize.

22 years of suffering have been banished from the history books.

Tottenham’s final battle for survival

The final day will be relatively excruciating for Arsenal’s north London rivals. By the time the Gunners are hoisting the Premier League trophy aloft, Tottenham Hotspur could be a Championship team.

Spurs are firmly in the driver’s seat to survive, but their safety is still uncertain heading into the final game of an absolutely awful season. Fellow Londoners and relegation rivals West Ham United are now two points clear on goal difference, so Tottenham realistically only need a draw at home against Everton.

West Ham host Leeds United on the other side of London and although they know their fate is out of their control, Tottenham’s inconsistency will bring fresh hope for the final game.

Relegation is out of the question for Spurs and their supporters will do anything for a routine win against the Toffees. But given the past nine months, that seems unlikely.

Chelsea vs Europe

Like their London rivals Tottenham, Chelsea have endured a miserable season, albeit not on the same scale as their opponents. But a visit to Sunderland on the final day presents a chance to regain some positivity.

Chelsea are confident they can qualify for next season’s continental football, either via the Europa League or the Conference League (which the Blues won in 2024-25), with incoming manager Xabi Alonso watching with great interest.

A win at the Stadium of Light would give them a good chance of qualifying for the Europa League, but they would need goodwill from Manchester United away at Brighton & Hove Albion. A draw would complicate matters further, but a loss could be fatal for their European ambitions.

A final push for the Blues, who were in a difficult situation.

The end of the Pep Guardiola era

Manchester City head into their final game at home against Aston Villa without a doubt after suffering a disastrous defeat against Bournemouth in midweek. However, the clash would still prove to be significant and would mark the end of a glorious, trophy-filled era under Pep Guardiola.

The Spaniard will be in charge of his final game as Man City manager at the Etihad Stadium, but the emotional end to a glorious decade was made all the more poignant as club icons John Stones and Bernardo Silva also bid farewell.

Guardiola and his players will be determined to finish the Spaniard’s incredible tenure with a deserved result, and a Villa side, likely still hungover from their midweek Europa League celebrations, will be the perfect opponents.

Liverpool legend’s farewell message

Liverpool will also bid farewell to several legends on Sunday. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson will be seen for the last time before their summer departures, bringing an incredible nine-year stint at Anfield to an end. There will be a few people on Merseyside teary-eyed both on the field and in the stands.

The Reds could finish on a good note with a home win against Brentford or a draw to qualify for the Champions League. Even if they lose, the Reds are unlikely to fall out of the top five, with Bournemouth needing a seven-goal swing to move above sixth place.

Barring a remarkable set of circumstances, Sunday would be a celebration of two amazing, transformative stars. Both deserve the warmest send-off.

At the end of a depressing season for Liverpool, this should be a day of celebration.

Bruno Fernandes chases history

Manchester United are another team that won’t take advantage of the result of this weekend’s trip to Brighton. Well, unless you’re Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese playmaker, who was named the Premier League’s Player of the Year on Saturday, is chasing the league’s assists record. He was level with Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry in the last edition, and with one more assist on the south coast he will have an unprecedented 21 assists this season.

Fernandes could have broken that record last weekend had it not been for his teammates’ wasteful finishing, and the United captain will challenge his forwards to find a clinical edge at the Amex Stadium.

Don’t be surprised if Fernandes passes some promising shooting chances to inspire his clubmates.
