“My childhood was difficult. My parents divorced when I was very young. I bounced around my family and found it hard to stay grounded. My life was chaotic and I had trouble making friends at school. But when I got home and put on some music, everything seemed to disappear. It was comforting. My grandmother would come over at night and if I fell asleep with my headphones on, she would take them off so I wouldn’t suffocate. The music was always there.”

Meet your heroes anytime
“I was living in Los Angeles and ended up working as a guitar technician for Exodus. Everyone was really cool when I got on the tour bus. I told them I went to see Exodus when the riots broke out. The fence collapsed and someone’s feet fell on me. So the show was canceled. People were just tearing up. There was a car burning in the parking lot, and the cops came to stop it. I told them that, and like all the guys I knew, a friendship developed right away.” ”
Saying “YES” can change your life
“During the tour, Zetro quit on very bad terms. He didn’t show up and turned off his phone. [Skinlab frontman] Steve Esquivel replaced me. Gary Holt said to me, “You should sing.” So I jumped up and sang the song. They were on tour with Megadeth, so it was packed with thousands of people.
“I don’t remember, but it was so surreal. Then I was in New York getting a tattoo and I got a phone call I’ll never forget. Gary and Tom. [Hunting, drums] They wanted me to audition. I said, “I’ll be there in a few weeks.” I hung up the phone and said to the tattoo artist, “I’m going to be the new singer of Exodus!” ””
never stop learning
“The first time I was on the stand for a show, it was horrible. I couldn’t remember the lyrics, I couldn’t hear the timing. I’d never really sung before. I have some pictures, and I just looked at the lyrics and thought, ‘Where the hell am I supposed to sing?!'” We didn’t rehearse. Gary and Tom were taking such a risk – it was insane for them to bring music to such a high level to people who had never done this before. This is not a bar band. I’m just a guy. But I learned how to do it. The first year we did 200 shows and the next year we did 250 shows. As the show progressed, I started learning more and more. ”
Keep your inspiration close
“I literally had [original vocalist] There were Paul Baroff’s ashes on the microphone stand when I sang. shovel head kill machine In the studio. When bands tell me stories about Barov, they talk about him with so much love and respect. Gary brought his ashes in a vial for me. Barov sang aggressively, he meant it, and he felt the lyrics. That’s how I felt shovel head. I felt the anger and darkness, embraced it, and sang in a small room with the lights dimmed. That was the focus, I just wanted to be as angry and aggressive as possible. ”
Breathe!
“The first day I went into the studio, I burst out laughing. I didn’t know anything about singing. I didn’t realize that if you didn’t breathe properly, you could hurt your throat. I screamed at the top of my lungs over and over again. By the end of each song, which I sang at full volume for an hour and a half, I was screaming with every fiber of my being.”
“I don’t know if you’ve ever screamed at the top of your lungs, but it takes your whole body to do that. I’ve learned to control my breathing. That’s how I don’t lose my voice. I’d say I sing louder than any other singer I’ve ever worked with. A lot of singers sing very low. I had that in my setlist: Breathe, Breathe, You’ll Forget It!”

“One of my best shows is on video. Wacken in 2008 was intense. We were just a fucking machine. It was the culmination of three years of touring, always touring and catching us at the right time. The best ever. , it was just perfect. There was another show in Chicago and it was pure mayhem and they were throwing out stage divers and we stopped playing until they got them back.”
Beware of Airport Bars
“We were supposed to go on a month-long tour of Europe, but our plane was delayed. Everyone got hit so hard at TGI Friday at the airport. The next flight wasn’t for six hours, so we were all wrecked. When we got on the plane, we were all drunk. And this lady started freaking out. The captain shoved us and called the police. When the police showed up, they were like, ‘Oh, you guys are in Exodus? I love that band!'” He took a picture and left. We boarded a flight 6 hours later and only missed one show. I remember everything because I was sober. I was the voice of reason! ”

“When I got fired from Exodus in 2014, I didn’t see it coming. I felt betrayed, angry, and resentful. I was scared as hell. My livelihood was gone. The fear made me angry. What was I going to do when I had done nothing but sing for the last 10 years? I was in no man’s land.”
and find new opportunities
“I got fed up and said, ‘Let’s get a job.’ The only thing I knew I could make a living at was working on cars. I found a place in Arizona through Roger.” [Miret] From Agnostic Front. I got hired and before I knew it I was a full-time mechanic restoring old 50’s and 60’s Volkswagens. I became a restorer. I got a whole new life. I studied by reading books and watching YouTube. Now I feel like a master welder! I love making things, and I love making things out of metal. ”

“Sometimes you’re not part of the plan. That’s the dark side of this thing. You’d think everyone would want to do it for one and one for everyone. But that’s not the case. There’s money on the table. I started dealing with the resentment and anger. I just looked out for myself and said to myself, “Do you really want to live a life of anger and resentment?” And I was right, because I had a whole new life.
Let’s talk
“I was just starting to put my life together. Exodus was in the past, it was on my resume. Generation Kill was more important to me. Gary called me and said come to San Francisco and we’d all like to talk. I was like, ‘Okay, but I still feel a little bad about it.'” I sat down with them and forgave them right then and there. In my head I said: they’re just doing their thing. ”And it was all good. From then on, I spoke to them regularly, but never about Exodus. That resentment was no more. ”
There’s life after quitting drinking
“I hope you can be successful even if you live on a tour bus and work in a drug and alcohol-infested workplace. I’m almost 33 years sober. I don’t handle alcohol very well and my friends say I’m like a mix of Hulk Hogan and David Lee Roth. I kept going to prison, I… I just liked to get into fights and just get drunk and go crazy. I watched my grandparents die from alcoholism. After I quit, I realized who I was, and if you listen, there’s hope, life will get better.”
