Letters to Sports: Shohei Ohtani reaches another level of greatness

Shohei Ohtani became just the sixth player in baseball history to reach 40 home runs and 40 steals in the same season earlier this summer. Now, Ohtani has created a 50-50 team. One big difference, Ohtani will only be one member!

Just when you think you’ve seen them all, Shohei Ohtani surprises us all! There is still time in the season for Ohtani to build on his historic accomplishments. His pre-match preparation proves that achieving goals is not by accident.

And I thought all this time that Roy Hobbs was The Natural.

Shohei Ohtani had the biggest game of my career (6 for 6, three homers, two doubles, two steals and 10 RBIs). Time. It’s simple and easy. The scary thing is, if he were to slide under the tag at third base (and end the game in the cycle), it would probably be the greatest game of any game of all time. That being said, his accomplishments won’t mean anything if the Dodgers don’t win the World Series. Since this will be his first MLB postseason, he has a chance to put a candle to what will likely be the greatest season of all time.

With the Dodgers’ pitching staff seemingly struggling at least once a week, the prospect of Shohei Ohtani pitching a little in the postseason is becoming more and more appealing. Assuming the Dodgers wouldn’t suspend Ohtani unless medically cleared, Ohtani’s ride in Aaron Judge’s World Series would be more fun than Bob Welch’s home run over Reggie Jackson in Game 2 of the 1978 Fall Classic.

Love DeShaun Foster, but he seems to be in over his head. How does UCLA hire a head coach with no head coaching experience?

In light of the UCLA football team’s big loss to unranked Indiana, and its strong win over low-ranked Hawaii, is it too late for the Bruins to join the Conference? Pac-12 youth? They may be able to compete with Colorado State and other newcomers.

I am a longtime UCLA football fan and season ticket holder. I’ve seen good, mediocre and underrated teams over the years, but never has there been another team as competitive as this year. They are slow, out of shape, lack discipline, and appear to be very poorly trained. Until the administration gives the football team at this great university the support it deserves and stops hiring inexperienced or lazy, burned out coaches, things will only get worse.

They are too smart for their own good

It is my understanding that Rams coach Sean McVay gave the starters out in the preseason to prevent injuries. If so, why have they suffered so many injuries in just the first two games? Could it be that players need preseason games to get into game shape and game mentality to be successful and prepare their bodies for the rigors of the game? The position and time will be affected without playing in real games.

The best word to describe the Rams organization is pride. It’s hard to imagine that Les Snead and Sean McVay weren’t shut down for catching Ernest Jones on the fly and coming back empty handed. He wanted more money and proved that he deserved it. But Snead and McVay knew better, and instead crippled the rookie defensive coordinator from the get-go because they had a better-than-expected season in 2023. The Rams still they could be 0-2 with Jones, but not for sure.

Is it Good Friday? Dylan Hernández predicts the Dodgers will win the World Series and Bill Plaschke is Nellie already calling their season over? None of them should call it right now with all the doubts about the Dodgers’ playoff turnaround, but this switcheroo personality throws me off. Next, will Plaschke say the Lakers need to trade LeBron and Hernández for USC to make the College Football Playoff? Oh, wait for that to happen too!

Do you believe in Magic?

So Magic Johnson will be “more involved” in the effort to make the Sparks relevant again in the WNBA.

We’ve heard that before with different LA teams at different times. And how did that work?

Sparks owners and managers, take note. To save your franchise, and the support of loyal fans, replace coach Curt Miller, who can’t seem to relate to his erratic, out-of-control players, with Dawn Staley of South Carolina, the basketball coach of win a women’s college.

Staley, the head coach of an NCAA women’s championship team, would be the perfect coach to strengthen this game, and make the Sparks a championship team again.
