Recently, I was thinking about buying a new smartwatch when I stopped to ask myself an important question: do I need this? I already have a smartwatch that I consider good enough, so why buy a new one? That’s where I came across the idea of ”good enough technology,” which I’ll be embracing from now on.
“What Is Good Enough Technology?”
This philosophy has made me wonder if I need to invest in the newest and brightest technology or if what I currently have is enough to get the job done. When the consumer is bombarded with advertisements showing the latest technology every day, it can be difficult to keep my credit card in my pocket. But the truth is, for most of us, our current technology does more than enough work. Sure, new technology may be faster and more advanced, but often, it doesn’t need to be. There are many cases where I have applied this philosophy to buying technology.
My PS5 works fine
PlayStation releases a new console every few years, so it’s a great thing when news hits the airwaves that a new console has dropped. So when Sony announced its PlayStation 5 Pro, it was big news. But even if the PS5 Pro is better than the PlayStation 5, byA more powerful GPU and storage space, there are no other significant improvements to speak of.
If you can’t settle for anything but the best graphics while playing your favorite RPG games, perhaps buying a new console is in order. But as far as I’m concerned, I’ll put in the $700 and keep playing my decent PS5 console.
My iPhone does everything I want
This might scare a tech writer, but I have an iPhone X and I don’t plan on upgrading anytime soon. To some, I’m a luddite, but I’m not at all. I don’t think Apple makes a strong enough case for me to upgrade. I agree that the camera on the new iPhones is much better than mine, and yes, the newest iPhones, compared to the ones I have, are definitely faster. Here’s the thing: I don’t care about taking high-quality photos and I don’t use very important apps on my phone that require faster hardware than they can handle.
Old Doesn’t Mean Bad, Too When It Comes To Televisions
There are about 200 companies that make televisions, and every year, they release a shiny new one. They don’t always do this because they have a premium product to offer; they do that because they know you will buy it. It’s not like they’re releasing televisions for the public; they do that because they have stakeholders to make them happy and the top executives can get even richer.
The main reason people buy new TVs is not because of the amazing technological innovations; it’s because they want a bigger TV. If this is the main reason, you can save hundreds of dollars by buying an older but larger TV.
Keeping My House Dumb
There is no end to the many types of creative, smart lighting that you can arrange throughout your home. You can set different lighting patterns for different rooms, times of day, people, and more.
I have no doubt that many smart home devices can make your life easier. The thing is, my home is now easy to manage without smart devices. I mean, it would be nice to have a smart fridge that alerts me when I’m out of chocolate milk, or I can open the fridge and check myself.
Smart home devices like Alexa, a smart thermostat, or a smart vacuum can all be nice to have. However, they don’t make my life any easier than my dumb gadgets to be worth their price.
Keep Kindles silent
The Kindle was a great invention. It is a simple e-reader that can hold more books than you can fit in your entire house, which you can read with the lights off and take with you wherever you go. It was so good that even I, the person who walks around the bookstore pulling books, made the switch.
Since I bought my Kindle in 2016, there have been eight new models, and I still don’t see the point in upgrading. The new Kindles have better resolution, bigger screens, longer battery life, faster speeds, and more storage than mine. By every metric measured, they are better.
However I think the Kindle best exemplifies this philosophy of “fitness.” Just because the technology is new and has better specs than its predecessor does not warrant an upgrade. Before you upgrade, ask yourself this question: Does my current device do everything I want? If the answer is yes, stop looking for a new version and go back to your book.
