Nebraska’s super regional win shows team is ready for Oklahoma City

Nebraska entered the 2026 postseason as the No. 4 seed in the nation, but you wouldn’t know it from the team’s behavior over the past two weeks.

Instead, they fought their way through the regional round with the expectations of being the No. 1 seed in the nation, sweeping Oklahoma State in the super regional. Everywhere you looked at the Huskers’ Bowlin Stadium final on Saturday, they looked like a team capable of competing for a national championship.

In two games against Oklahoma State, Nebraska State used a combination of dominant pitching, effective defense, and timely offense to win 8-1 and 9-1, advancing to the Women’s College World Series for the first time since 2013. The Huskers outscored Oklahoma State 17-2 in the series, including scoring seven points in the fifth inning of Saturday’s decisive victory that ended in run rule.

The Huskers are currently 51-6, on a 26-game winning streak and one win away from tying the school’s season winning record. This winning streak was the longest in program history and remains the longest streak in the country.

Despite all of these accomplishments, Nebraska’s postgame tone reflected a team more focused on maintaining the approach that got them there than celebrating getting to the College World Series.

“There’s eight teams in that tournament and who can win? I think we can play with anyone,” Nebraska head coach Rhonda Revell said after Saturday’s win. “If we take it the same way we’ve been taking it, that’s how we feel. If we stay pitch-to-pitch, we’re not going to get very far. I’ve said it many times this year, and I truly believe that’s the recipe.”

This recipe appeared repeatedly on both local and super local weekends. Players and coaches consistently mentioned staying in the present and avoiding the tendency to look too far ahead.

“Every game is its own little season, so we don’t even know if we’re on a winning streak or not,” Rebel said. “I think if you can stay boring, you’ll be fine.”

Nebraska’s consistency is especially noticeable in the circle.

Freshman Alexis Jensen pitched strongly in Saturday’s deciding game, giving up two hits and one run in four innings, with seven strikeouts. She improved to 25-2 on the season and has already set Nebraska freshman single-season records for both wins and strikeouts. Jensen had 217 strikeouts this season, surpassing former Husker standout and current associate head coach Lori Sippel’s freshman record of 210.

Jensen and senior standout Jordy Frahm form one of the most effective postseason pitching duos in the country. Through five games in the NCAA Tournament, the duo allowed just two earned runs in 33 innings, posting a 0.42 ERA.

Jensen credited Frahm for helping him deal with difficult moments throughout the season.

“She taught me to be a better competitor and a better person in general when I’m on the mound,” Jensen said. “She taught me that we do make mistakes, but how do we respond? How do we respond to mistakes?”

Jensen said perspective became especially important as expectations continued to rise around the team during the season.

β€œI have to stay grounded on this team,” she said. β€œI have to give everything I have to the team and help them to the best of my ability without worrying about my personal matters.”

Meanwhile, Frahm said Jensen’s confidence has had a noticeable impact on her as well.

β€œWhat I learned from Rex and what I really embraced was just the way she came in as a completely fearless freshman,” Frahm said. β€œShe put her head down from the first moment she stepped in the circle against a top offense.”

Oklahoma State took the lead Saturday with an RBI single in the opening inning, but Nebraska quickly regained control. The Huskers tied the game in the third inning with a walk by Frahm, then scored on Hannah Kuhl’s double. Kuhl then homered on Hannah Kamenjindo’s sacrifice fly to give Nebraska a 2-1 lead.

Nebraska broke the game with seven runs in the fifth inning and won on a 9-1 run rule. The nine points were also the most points ever scored by the University of Nebraska in an NCAA Super Regional game. After a slow and steady district tournament in which Nebraska only scored seven points in three games, the offensive production certainly caught the attention of both fans and media.

Revell emphasized that Nebraska’s approach at the plate has been consistent throughout the postseason, even in low-scoring games against South Dakota State and Grand Canyon.

“This offense works hard every day. They’re very intentional, very detailed, and they work very hard to do their best,” Revell said. “Sometimes it shows in a one-goal win, and sometimes it shows in the way we played (Saturday). Our job hasn’t changed. Our preparation hasn’t changed.”

Nebraska’s pitching and defense may finally give the Huskers confidence to play in next week’s Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Throughout the hyperregional, Nebraska limited Oklahoma State’s opportunities to build any kind of momentum. The Huskers played clean defense, turning around key double plays and avoiding mistakes that often escalate at this time of year.

“At this point in the season, the clichΓ©s of pitching and defense really win championships,” Rebel said after Friday’s 8-1 win. β€œAnd once the attack creates some separation and distance, you can just breathe a little bit.”

Revell also noted that Nebraska has continued to focus on defensive fundamentals since last season ended one game short of the 2025 Women’s College World Series.

β€œAt practice, we had a little drill called a flip and feed, and we did that every day all year long,” Rebel said. “I felt like that kept us sharp. It allowed us to stick to our fundamentals.”

Last season’s experience remained part of the background going into this weekend. Nebraska won last year’s Super Regional opener against Tennessee, but lost the next two games, narrowly missing out on a trip to Oklahoma City.

This year’s setup felt very different for the program, and a lot of that had to do with the fact that the ballgame was being played in Lincoln. Bolin Stadium had a packed crowd all weekend, and Revell said the atmosphere was one of the defining parts of the experience.

“Last week, after I won with alumni from all over the country, my phone started blowing up,” Rebel said. “They’re saying, ‘We can’t afford to miss this.'”

Frahm said the environment heightened the energy surrounding the series.

“It was loud. It was fun,” Frahm said. β€œYou could definitely feel a great moment building with the audience.”

Maybe the crowd will feel Nebraska-centric again when the team makes the trip to Oklahoma City. If it’s anything like what the men’s basketball team saw during the NCAA Tournament, this week’s College World Series could look awfully red.

Nebraska will now head to OKC to face Arkansas State in the opening game of the Women’s College World Series. The Huskers have appeared in this event eight times in program history, but this appearance has a different feel considering how Nebraska played in the final two months of the season.

The Huskers own the nation’s longest winning streak and have one of the most talented postseason pitching staffs in the country. It also doesn’t hurt that they have a roster that has consistently handled high-pressure moments without looking depleted.

β€œI think I can play with anyone,” Rebel said.

Based on Nebraska’s performance throughout the super regional, the Huskers aren’t the only ones who believe that statement.
