The opening “Immersion” suite provides a front-and-center attack that shows intensity and range, with chunky riffs and eerie melodies colliding with frightening intensity. The more intense parts take on an almost mechanical, death-metal heaviness, thanks to choppy staccato chugs and cold atmospheric tricks (“Immersion II”, title track), while the solos and cleans inject the humanity needed to avoid drowning in industrial isolation (“Immersion I” and “II”, “Wither”, title track). On other tracks, we encounter a more hardcore-inspired approach, chaotic movements, and shifting rhythms that remind us of things like: black sheep wall and canute (“Worst Laid Plans”), Yaroševich’s drums laying the foundation of the shifting sands.

The 54-minute running time is both a blessing and a curse for the film. blind dead twenty three: It allows them breathing space to explore all aspects of themselves, but drags the slow moments down like a snail’s crawl. Hypnotic, dirge-like songs are sometimes enhanced by an eerie atmosphere (“Immersion II”), but they can last too long and take away the intensity the band has effectively established (“Wither”), and even good songs can feel several minutes too long (“Worst Laid Plans”). Range is the name of the game, but some of the tricks feel too far-fetched, including the bluesy, evocative plucked and jazzy melodies (“Toward the Dark”) and the startling optimism that clashes with the overall darkness of their debut (“You Are the Universe”). However, this is not the case blind dead – the blind dead twenty three – and the band would be better off exploring all avenues instead of just playing it safe.
