Kyle Busch harshly criticized Joey Logano until the end

Joey Logano and Kyle Busch have had a well-documented rivalry over the past two decades.

Even as their relationship began to thaw and he enjoyed casual respectability in recent years, “Rowdy” never passed up an opportunity to take potshots at the fellow Cup Series champion in public. Just over a month ago, Bush appeared on “Hangouts with Sean Hannity” and revealed that Logano, Brad Keselowski and Carson Hosever are insufferable pals.

Although Bush was characteristically a bit showy for the cameras, it’s also true that he and Logano were far from friendly at the time of his death.

“On the racetrack, we kind of had a little rivalry, so to speak, and we didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of things from that standpoint, but we were able to put that aside and joke around and see a little bit of what it was and who knows what would have happened once the race was over,” Logano said at a press conference before Saturday’s Coca-Cola 600. I would. ”

Earlier in the day, Michael McDowell revealed that the two rivals ended up playing basketball with each other and their respective children at Talladega last month, and Bush couldn’t resist either.

“I feel like one of the memories that sticks in my head is Talladega just a few weeks ago has been playing in my head for the last few days,” McDowell said. “Kyle, Brexton, and the kids were all playing basketball, and my son was playing too, and I just remember him playing basketball with them, and (Kyle) talking trash to Joey, it was so much fun.

“I mean, they had some kind of rivalry, right? But when you’re on the driver’s property and the kids are playing, it’s a different environment.”

Logano said he only ended up playing that pick-up game because he wanted to playfully confront Bush about his comments to Hannity.

“Probably the last time I talked to Kyle was at the playground at Talladega,” Logano said. “I remember when I met him, I first walked up to him because it was right after he said on his podcast that he didn’t like me. Of course, I just ran into things head on, so I walked up to him and said, ‘Oh my god, I thought we were friends?’

“Afterwards, we had a good laugh and joked about it. Brexton and Hudson, they play together all the time. He’s a great kid, so he’s shooting hoops, but to be honest, neither of us knew how to play basketball a shitty amount. So I’m glad the cameras didn’t see it because it was a little embarrassing.”

“I’m glad no one saw that because it hurt my claim to being an athlete.”

This was a common refrain on Saturday, as Logano said Busch shows his persona on the track but will peel it away after a timeout.

“Kyle had aspects that could keep him away from the racetrack and away from the competitive environment,” Logano said. “I was able to fly to the West Coast with him and spend a lot of time playing cards and stuff.”

For example, Chase Briscoe repeated a similar experience.

“There were two very different sides to Kyle,” Briscoe said. “With the competition side and Kyle off the track, it’s going to be a struggle, break the ball and be a lot of fun.

“It’s funny. There was a time when we were both into this media thing. We were talking backstage and he was just Kyle. We got on stage and he was talking shit, so we got off stage and told him it’s crazy that he can turn it on and off.”

What did Bush say?

“Oh, that was Rowdy. That was my Rowdy face.”

Briscoe said Bush was very good at playing both roles seamlessly depending on the situation.
