May 22nd: The Marlins announced today that Snelling underwent UCL repair surgery using an internal device. They have given him a 10-12 month return timetable, so it seems like he could be back in the first half of the 2027 season.
May 21st:The Marlins left-handed pitcher made this announcement to reporters, including Craig Misch of Sports Grid. robbie snelling He will undergo Tommy John surgery. He was moved to the 60-day injured list earlier today and is expected to remain there for the remainder of the year. He will likely be out until around the All-Star break in 2027.
Requiring Tommy John surgery is obviously terrible news for any pitcher, but the timing is especially bitter for Snelling. He has spent the past few years working his way through the minor leagues, becoming one of the top pitching prospects in the game. Miami called him up to the majors earlier this month and he made his major league debut. However, he felt some discomfort after his first start and was diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament (the ligament that is replaced during Tommy John surgery).
Instead of gaining major league success, Snelling will only be on the stat sheet for one game and spend a significant amount of time rehabbing. TJS typically requires a recovery period of 14 months or more, meaning Snelling will miss the remainder of the 2026 season and likely at least half of 2027.
The only silver lining for Snelling personally is that this injury happened so soon after he was promoted. Since he is on the Major League IL, he will collect major league salary and time throughout his rehabilitation process. If the injury had happened a few weeks ago, when he was still in the minors, that wouldn’t have happened.
This is a slight plus for Snelling, but a minus for the Marlins. They called up Snelling in May, so he wasn’t available for a full season this season. That means his reign at the club will include this year and six more seasons. At the time, he could have been a mainstay in the Marlins’ rotation. Or, if he ends up on the trade block, as many of Miami’s pitchers do, that room for control could end up being part of a trade appeal.
Instead, he will be shelved for most of the first two years of a seven-year period. There’s still plenty of time for him to get back on track and establish himself as a viable big league arm, but this would take a lot of management space away from the club.
The Marlins will likely have to proceed without Snelling for some time to come. Not long ago, it was full of deep rotation. They felt their arsenal was sufficient for a deal. edward cabrera and ryan weathers In the offseason, they will be able to add some offensive power and prospects. Despite those trades, they entered the season with a rotation consisting of: sandy alcantara, Yuri Perez, max meyer, Chris Paddack and janson junk. Their minor league depth includes; braxton garrettSnelling and fellow prospects thomas white.
But what often happens is that the surplus evaporates. The Fish selected Paddack to make room for Snelling. Once Snelling hit the IL, they called up Garrett, but Garrett failed in two starts and was optioned back to the minors. White is not a short-term option, as he was placed on the minor league IL on Tuesday.
Junk started for the Marlins yesterday. Alcantara, Perez and Meyer are expected to start the next three games. By Sunday, there will need to be some kind of plan, whether it’s a bullpen game or a spot starter. tyler phillips He has pitched multiple innings out of the bullpen and could be part of the solution. In addition to Garrett, they dax fulton, i like ryan and bradley blalock Regarding option assignments. All three of these players have ERAs above 4.40 in Triple-A this year.
